EUCLID’S ELEMENTS

OF INTERPLANETARY MARRIAGE

“And the whole is greater than the part.”

—Euclid

My husband and I originate from two different countries. This accounts for many of our differences. But sometimes I feel as though there is an entire solar system dividing our places of origin instead of an ocean. We aren’t even on the same planet.

I come from a place where magic is created. I can watch a dance performance and be moved to tears. I hear a piece of music and feel goosebumps on my arms. I am tickled to laughter simply by using my ability to see the absurd in the most ordinary of moments. Sometimes, and this is by far my most preferred way to be inconvenienced, I feel the presence of a muse on my shoulder. She whispers in my ear as she caresses me with inspiration to write. This is all terribly distracting. I end up abandoning whatever task I was involved in to sit and shape my thoughts before she decides to fade into the ether and turn her favor to someone else who is open to her energy. All of these things are available to me because I come from the planet Artist.

It is easy to spot my kind. We can frequently be found picking ourselves up and brushing away the dirt from our clothes. Artists are notorious for tripping over roots and rocks because our focus is almost always directed skyward. Always reaching on the tips of our toes, trying to grasp that little gem of an idea by the tail and pull it into fruition. For an artist, there is no grander preoccupation than holding the potential of creative energy. We feel its weight in our palms and begin the process of massaging it from a cerebral concept into a tangible creation.

It’s delicious.

It’s consuming.

It’s exhausting.

My husband, by contrast, hails from a place where the inhabitants are preoccupied with mathematical equations. Instead of fiction on his bedside table, you will find titles such as CALCULUS: FOUNDATIONS AND APPLICATIONS, DATA STRUCTURES & DIGITAL COMPRESSION, CONCRETE MATHEMATICS, FINITE MATHEMATICS, PATTERN-ORIENTED SOFTWARE ARCHITECTURE, and, of course, the riveting second edition of FOUNDATIONS OF ALGORITHMS: EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK.

You see, my husband’s place of origin is the planet Geek.

People from planet Geek also pick themselves out of the dirt, but instead of gazing to the heavens above, their clumsiness is generally attributed to having their nose stuck in a book or screen. Many of these souls shine so brightly with intellectual genius they appear at times to lack basic social and interpersonal skills.

My husband is passionate about math. In fact, he refers to it as an art. It is, without a doubt, his preferred form of expression. It functions beautifully for him when constructing elegant software code, compressing data, generating digital images, all the myriad computer programming tasks I won’t pretend to have a clue about.

Sadly, it does little to help him communicate with his family; his wife in particular. She has
